Students Shine at Solar Olympics
Question: What do you get when you add a tiny electric motor, a small panel of photovoltaic cells and a little high school ingenuity?
Answer: The fastest event at the 12th annual Solar Olympics, held Wednesday, May 14 at the Kress Events Center on Campus.
More than 30 Wisconsin high schools went for the gold in the green energy competition, sponsored by the Wisconsin Public Service Community Foundation.
The event challenged competitors to design, construct and demonstrate a solar cooker, a solar water heater, a sculpture with a solar theme, and a solar-powered race car.
In addition, the students took part in an essay contest, a “solar jeopardy” quiz game and events for solar building design, solar T-shirt design, solar photography, community presentation and a marketing campaign.
Judges from on campus and around the community helped decide the best designs and presentations based on a number of criteria. It was the largest-ever Solar Olympics to date, organizers said.
