Great Lakes Compact signed into law
Gov. Jim Doyle on Tuesday (May 27) signed the Great Lakes Compact, a historic, bipartisan agreement aimed at protecting, preserving and improving the Great Lakes.
He was joined at Bay Beach Park for the signing by Victoria Harris, a water quality and habitat restoration specialist for the Sea Grant Institute office on campus, state Senators Dave Hansen and Rob Cowles—who are both UW-Green Bay alumni—and other business, government and environmental leaders from the region.
Harris, Hansen and Cowles witnessed the bill signing from behind the Governor’s right shoulder and each received an official pen Doyle used to enact the legislation.
“This historic accord means that we will be managing our Great Lakes water in a sustainable way that will protect one of the world’s greatest natural resources,” Doyle said. “The Great Lakes define this region, and their waters sustain our recreation, our way of life and our economy.”
