Hammersmith's Goodbye

Friday, May 30, is Provost Sue K. Hammersmith’s last day on the UW-Green Bay campus. She announced her resignation in March and will leave to become the president of Metropolitan State University in the Twin Cities.

Hammersmith assumed her duties as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs on July 1, 2002. She came to UW-Green Bay from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., where she served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1987 to 2002.

“I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the entire UWGB community for your friendship, support, and guidance over the past six years,” Hammersmith said. “I am so very proud of you, of UWGB, and of all you have accomplished for this region and for our students. I will always remember our time together with great fondness and gratitude, and I will take a lot of Green Bay with me. Until our paths cross again, stay well, best wishes, and continue your great work to make the world better.”

Metropolitan State University, which has campuses in St. Paul and Minneapolis and serves more than 9,000 students in credit courses annually, provides a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs. She will start there July 1, after returning from a trip to Romania to visit a former exchange student her family hosted.

A small cake and punch gathering was held May 19 in the University Union to say "goodbye" to Provost Hammersmith.
