Jessica Doyle promotes continuing education to Upward Bound students

Wisconsin First Lady Jessica Doyle told about 40 youngsters from the city of Green Bay Tuesday (July 15) why it’s important to continue their educations after high school.

Doyle was on the UW-Green Bay campus reaching out to, and gathering feedback from, participants in the University’s Upward Bound program.

Upward Bound educates potential first-generation college students (those whose parents didn't graduate from college) from Green Bay East, Green Bay West and Green Bay Preble high schools. The summer program is designed to academically prepare students to continue in higher education by teaching core subjects and several electives in addition to year-round tutoring.

Doyle also talked about the Wisconsin Covenant, a program that guarantees students a spot in a UW System school, a Wisconsin technical college or one of the state’s 20 private colleges or universities if they graduate high school with at least a “B” average.

“The overall message is that in Wisconsin, you are really important,” Doyle said. “We don’t want to miss anyone’s talent. Look at all this wonderful, wonderful energy, and intelligence and creativity right in this room. All the state leaders are saying, ‘Go on to higher education, be the best you can be. Any dream you have, we’ll find a way to help you get there, as long as you’re willing to do the work.’ And I know you all are.”
