Eleven selected for Chancellor's Medallions

GREEN BAY - Eleven graduating seniors at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay have been selected to receive the 2000 Chancellor's Medallion in recognition of sustained campus and community service and leadership during their university careers. The awards were presented in a luncheon program December 6. Recipients will again be recognized in a program that begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, in the Christie Theatre of the University Union, on campus.

Students receiving the Chancellor's Medallion are Shari Hilding-Kronforst, Meleesa Johnson, Sally Kobussen, Kelly Loasching, Steven Potokar, Michael Powers, Christa Steene, Andrea Stiff, Chrissy Stunyo, Tim Titler, and Jessica Winter.

Shari Hilding-Kronforst will graduate with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, earth science and biology. She immersed herself in activities involving preservation and conservation. As a recipient of the Cofrin Arboretum Research Grant, her research involved developing and monitoring the Monarch population on the arboretum grounds. In two separate research projects she did a chemical analysis of nodules collected from a suspected arsenic containing formation and its mapping for groundwater contamination. She also helped the Earth Science Department verify soil types on campus grounds and she created a digital map that will be integrated into the campus information system. Much of her research is being studied at both regional and national levels. Off campus she has served as a board member and citizen advocate for the town of Kaukauna, where she helped pass ordinances that resulted in habitat restoration and preservation of farmland. She is also a literacy tutor for the Fox Valley Literacy Coalition and is involved in a volunteer capacity for many Northeast Wisconsin nature centers.

Meleesa Johnson will graduate with a bachelor's degree in environmental policy and planning. As chair of Manitowoc County Earth Day, she increased attendance from 75 to 500 participants. Working at the United Way in the summer of 2000, she took the directive to develop, revise, test and administer a survey to assess how Hispanics in the community work with community members. As a representative of the Student Government Association, she provided key leadership in bringing the need for childcare on campus to the forefront. She received the 2000 UW-Green Bay Student Directorship Award from the Student Government Association and received the Wisconsin Women in Government Scholarship. She was actively involved in student government and community work at UW-Manitowoc where she was a student from 1996 to 1998.

Sally Kobussen will graduate with a degree in human development and psychology. She helped found the Community/University Mentoring Partnership in the summer of 1999, which pairs at-risk children with college students. This program has lasting benefits for both the University and at-risk youths in the Green Bay community. With help from a national grant the program has the potential to grow tremendously in the near future. As a teacher's assistant for the Introduction to Psychology course, she developed a Web site with a chatroom to benefit students who have questions outside the classroom.

Kelly Loasching will graduate with a major in communication processes and an emphasis in public relations. Her extensive involvement with the University Union over four years has led to her current position as staff supervisor overseeing graphic design, advertising, marketing and Web site production. She is also a student representative on the Association of College Union International Region's Steering Committee representing campuses in Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and Upper Michigan. In 1998 she received a Top 10 Program Award by the Residence Hall and Apartment Association of Wisconsin, for her program about maintaining a positive mental attitude. She is currently a student representative on the UW-Green Bay Equality of Women work team.

Steven Potokar will graduate with a degree in environmental science. He has immersed himself in student government and many other activities on campus. He served as chairperson of the Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee (SUFAC) which represents the student body to objectively allocate and assure responsible use of University fees. As part of the University Union Board, he provided leadership to secure funding for the After Hours dances, one of the most popular student activities on campus. He provided key leadership in the Straight and Gay Alliance (SAGA), educating people on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered issues. He also served on the Campus Life for the 21st Century Committee and the Health Services Advisory Committee.

He is a volunteer for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, helping taxpayers file their income taxes for free. He is currently interning at Schreiber Foods, the third internship of his academic career.

Christa Steene will graduate with a degree in public administration and an emphasis in public and non-profit organizations. She served as Residence Hall and Apartment Association President and chair of the Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee where she was instrumental in beginning a reserve fund that will be used for improving facilities at UW-Green Bay. She has served in a volunteer capacity for Brown County Human Services, March of Dimes, Brown County PALS Program, Girl Scouts, Red Cross, the United Way, and many other organizations. As part of an independent study, she researched Brown County foster care and she served as a Quality Resources Intern at Prevea Clinic. She works as a Health Unit Coordinator at Bellin Hospital and is an on-call juvenile delinquents worker for Brown County Shelter Care.

Stunyo was also the vice president of the Society for Human Resources Management, coordinating two major programs including the revival of the Etiquette Dinner and the Resume Portfolio Program.

Tim Titler will graduate with a degree in computer science. He served as a computer lab consultant and computer lab assistant manager on campus. He was instrumental as a member of the Residence Hall and Apartment Association in bringing to UW-Green Bay its first Wisconsin University Residence Hall Association (WURHA) Small School of the Year Award. He was named the National Association of College and University Residence Halls and the WURHA Communications Coordinator of the Year. He twice received the State's highest honor for a residence assistant, a S.T.A.R pin for outstanding service, tenacity, attitude and reliability. He also found time to serve an internship as a database developer for Humana Dental and is currently involved in an internship as an application developer.

With eye on fall, UW-Green Bay limits admissions for spring semester 2001

GREEN BAY-The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will close admission on Friday, Dec. 15, for new freshman and transfer students for spring semester classes that begin January 16, 2001.

The action by the University's enrollment management team applies to degree-seeking new freshmen and transfer students and does not, at this time, apply to some other categories of students, says Steve Neiheisel, assistant dean for enrollment services.

Applications are being accepted for re-enrolling former UW-Green Bay students and for students in the Extended Degree, nursing degree completion and graduate programs. Applications also are being accepted for "special students," typically adults not seeking degrees who register for one course. "The key phrase is 'at this time'," says Neiheisel, adding that other categories of students may have to be limited if the strong enrollment trend continues.

He explains that the move is necessary to insure that resources, such as adequate class sections and services, are available for the students who are enrolled and to look ahead to maintaining the University's fall 2001 target of 4,357 fulltime equivalent students.

The University's enrollment numbers are being driven by both new applications and retention, according to Neiheisel. Applications for spring semester from transfer students especially are up significantly and early registration for spring by continuing students is well ahead of last year's numbers.

"We were over our fall 2000 target to begin with, and our applications from new freshmen for fall 2001 are up over this time last year by about ten percent," says Neiheisel. He adds that the target freshman class enrollment of 878 fulltime equivalent students for fall 2001 is actually below that of the 2000 class.

"We will have to control enrollment," he adds. "If these trends continue, it is likely we'll have an early closing date for admission for fall 2001, too."

Questions about the application process can be directed to the UW-Green Bay Admissions and Orientation Office at (920) 465-2111.
