UW-Green Bay moves to limit admissions for fall 2000

GREEN BAY - The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is closing admission for new freshmen and transfer students, effective Friday, June 30.

The University is nearing its fall 2000 target of 4,357 FTE (full-time equivalent) students, based upon an overall enrollment of about 5,300 full- and part-time individuals. New-freshman registration is already up 4 percent from last year, with an incoming class of approximately 865 students. The University is also running ahead of schedule in the registration of transfers, re-entries and master's degree students.

Pam Harvey-Jacobs, interim director of admissions, says UW-Green Bay will continue to accept applications in the "special student" category, which typically applies to adults who are not necessarily seeking degrees but register for one course per semester on a space-available basis. In addition, the University will accept and consider, on a case-by-case basis, new-freshman applications from those with special circumstances or academic abilities. Graduate and Extended Degree categories remain open.

Questions about the application process may be directed to the UW-Green Bay Office of Admissions and Orientation at (920) 465-2111.

Noll honored by national nursing association

GREEN BAY - Lorraine Noll, associate professor emerita of nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, has been recognized by a national organization for her work in bringing continuing education to nurses across the region.

Noll received the Certified Nurse Award from the American Nurses Credentialing Center at the organization's annual meeting in Indianapolis on June 25. The awards committee cited her work in bringing visibility to nursing certification and outreach programs to adult learners.

Noll, a resident of Two Rivers, retired last month from the UW-Green Bay faculty after nearly two decades of service. She won the University's community outreach award in 1993 for leading workshops, teaching courses, and supervising clinical experiences, particularly at satellite locations including Rhinelander and Woodruff in northern Wisconsin. Her UW-Green Bay degree-completion program was designed to help nurses holding two- or three-year R.N. diplomas earn bachelor's degrees while they continued working.

A native of Neillsville, Noll holds a bachelor's degree in nursing from Alverno College and a master's in nursing from UW-Oshkosh.

Muhl, Murphy are appointed academic deans on interim basis

GREEN BAY - Professors Jane Muhl and Michael Murphy have accepted appointments as interim academic deans for the 2000-2001 school year at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Muhl, an associate professor and chairperson of the university's Nursing program, will serve as interim dean of professional studies and outreach. Murphy, a longtime professor in the Humanistic Studies and English programs and most recently an associate dean, will serve as interim dean of liberal arts and sciences.

The two deans share administrative responsibility for the University's academic programs and report directly to the institution's top officer for academic affairs, Provost and Vice Chancellor Howard Cohen.

Muhl assumes the duties of Nancy Kaufman, who resigned to accept a position as assistant vice chancellor for graduate school and research at UW-Oshkosh. Murphy succeeds Carol Pollis, who retired.

Muhl came to UW-Green Bay in 1995 from the University of Iowa and the Iowa Department of Education where she served as a nurse educator. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, where she also received her bachelor's degree, and an M.S. in adult health nursing from South Dakota State University and an M.Ed. in teacher education and health education from the University of Georgia. As chairperson of UW-Green Bay's Professional Program in Nursing, Muhl led the unit during a period in which it obtained full accreditation, entered the UW System Consortial Nursing Program and established itself, in an alliance with NursingCenter.com, as the centerpiece of a new venture offering degree-completion courses to nurses nationwide.

Murphy has been a faculty member in the UW System since 1965 and a member of the UW-Green Bay faculty since 1968. His administrative experience includes seven years as associate dean of general education and faculty development and the last four years as associate dean of liberal arts and sciences. He is one of only a handful of professors in the institution's history to have twice received the Founders Association Award for Excellence, having been honored for excellence in teaching as well as for institutional development, in recognition of his many and varied administrative and service contributions over his UW-Green Bay career. He earned his bachelor's degree at Marquette University and his master's and doctoral degrees at UW-Madison.

Werner is appointed interim director of development

GREEN BAY - The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has appointed Tony Werner to lead its fundraising efforts as interim executive director of development.

Werner accepts the position after three years as director of development for the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, where he has helped build annual-fund participation and strengthen donor-relations efforts.

He came to UW-Green Bay in 1997 after serving as gift and estate planning director for St. Norbert College, foundation director for St. Mary's Hospital, and assistant director of development at Silver Lake College. He holds a bachelor's degree in communication from St. Norbert and a master's degree in management from Cardinal Stritch College. He earned his ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) designation from the American College in Bryn Mawr, Penn., and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive as recognized by the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.

The process of filling the executive director of development position on a permanent basis is expected to begin later this year. Werner succeeds Steve Swan, who left the University to pursue opportunities in the private sector.

Regents approve seven UW-Green Bay faculty promotions

GREEN BAY - Seven members of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay faculty have been promoted by action of the UW Board of Regents.

Promoted to full professor from the rank of associate professor are Cheryl Grosso, Judith Martin, and Laura Riddle.

Grosso and Riddle are both professors in the Communication and the Arts department, and Grosso serves as its chair. Riddle, who joined the faculty in 1993, is chair of the theatre discipline. Grosso, a member of the music discipline, earned her bachelor's degree at UW-Green Bay in 1978 and joined the faculty in 1985 after completing advanced degrees.

Martin, a professor of Social Work, came to UW-Green Bay in 1999 from the University of Pittsburgh where she had been a professor in the School of Social Work and a member of its faculty since 1978.

Four faculty members moved from probationary status as assistant professors to the rank of associate professor. They are Gregory Aldrete, Marcello Cruz, Mark Everingham, and Marilyn Sagrillo. Cruz, who teaches in Urban and Regional Studies and geography, joined the faculty in 1994. Aldrete, a member of the Humanistic Studies and history faculties, and Everingham, who teaches in Social Change and Development and political science, both came to UW-Green Bay in 1995.

Sagrillo began teaching at UW-Green Bay as a lecturer in 1978, and became an assistant professor in 1996 after taking time out to earn a Ph.D. When she received the 1990 Founders Association award for excellence in teaching, she was the first non-faculty member to be so honored. Sagrillo is a member of the Business Administration and accounting faculties.

Credit courses ranging in subject matter from brain-based learning to assessment strategies to the Internet are offered from June through August.

Courses will be held in many Northeastern Wisconsin locations including Green Bay, Brussels, Pulaski, Little Chute, Wrightstown, Waupaca, Seymour, Two Rivers, Denmark, Sturgeon Bay and Mishicot. "Digital Technology: Multimedia in the Classroom," "Microsoft Office for Teachers," "AIMS: Math Connections," and "Thinking about the Brain and Learning," are samples of offered courses.

The program, "A World of Difference," takes place on Thursday, Aug. 3, and Monday through Friday, Aug. 7 to 11, in Green Bay. The program recognizes the critical role that educators play in teaching students how to counter the escalation of bigotry and violence in the world.
