UW-Green Bay announces additional measures to limit enrollment

GREEN BAY - Already closed for new-freshman enrollment for fall semester 2001, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has announced it will take the additional step of halting the admission of transfer students effective Friday, July 13.

Continued strong enrollment demand and increased retention of current students are behind the move, according to Assistant Dean for Enrollment Services Steve Neiheisel.

"Our continuing students registered for fall well above rates of previous years," Neiheisel says. "In addition, although we closed early for new freshman applications, in February, it appears the yield from those applications will increase. Finally, transfer applications have already exceeded prior years. We've already received more than one thousand transfer applications, with two months to go before classes begin."

UW-Green Bay has a state-approved target of 4,357 full-time equivalent students for fall 2001.

The targets help UW System institutions maintain quality by keeping enrollment aligned with available resources such as adequate class sections and student services. "We must ensure that our resources adequately serve those students that do enroll," Neiheisel says.

In addition to the July 13 cutoff for transfer applications, the University announces it will require that all degree-seeking undergraduate applications be completed by Tuesday, July 31. Some exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis. Applications for graduate, non-degree (special), Extended Degree program, re-enrolling and off-campus programs will remain open.

Questions about the application process can be directed to the UW-Green Bay Admissions and Orientation Office at (920) 465-2111.

Eight UW-Green Bay faculty members promoted

GREEN BAY -- The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents approved promotions for eight members of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay faculty at its June meeting.

Two faculty members were promoted from associate professor to full professor. Gregory Davis, a mathematician who is a member of the Natural and Applied Sciences faculty, joined UW-Green Bay in 1987. He earned a bachelor's degree at UW-Green Bay and advanced degrees at Northwestern University. Illene Noppe, a member of the Human Development and Psychology faculties, came to UW-Green Bay in 1984 from a previous position at Lawrence University. She earned a Ph.D. at Temple University.

Five faculty members were promoted to associate professor from the probationary rank of assistant professor. Michael Hencheck and Patricia Terry are both members of the Natural and Applied Sciences faculty. Hencheck, a physicist, joined the University in 1998, and Terry, an engineer, has been on the faculty since 1995. Scott Wright, Communication and the Arts and Music, came to UW-Green Bay in 1997. Georjeanna Wilson-Doenges, who began teaching at the University in 1995, is a member of the Urban and Regional Studies and Psychology faculties. Anne Kok, Social Work, has served the University in various capacities including lecturer, family living specialist, and assistant professor, since 1987.

James Coates, Education, was moved from status as an associate professor without tenure to associate professor with tenure. He joined the University in 1999.

UW-Green Bay announces Pollis as interim provost

GREEN BAY-The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will fill a second major administrative vacancy with an emeritus dean and faculty member who has longtime ties to the campus and community.

Carol Pollis has agreed to serve as interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs during the tenure of Interim Chancellor William Kuepper. She will assume her new duties July 1.

As interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, Pollis will be chief academic officer reporting to the chancellor, and the University's chief operating officer - overseeing student services and information services as well as the academic programs.

"Carol Pollis is one of the most respected faculty members and academic leaders ever to have served this institution," said Kuepper, who announced the appointment today (Tuesday, June 12). "I am delighted that she has agreed to return, on an interim basis, to help this University continue to progress during this time of transition."

Pollis holds the title of dean emerita at UW-Green Bay. She retired from the University last year having served as a member of the faculty since 1969, and as an academic dean since 1988. She was dean of humanities, social sciences and general education from 1988 until 1996, when with reorganization she became dean of liberal arts and sciences.

"I am very pleased to return to this University in an interim capacity," Pollis said. "I look forward to working with the Interim Chancellor and the leadership team to move forward with the institutional agenda."

UW-Green Bay is in the process of conducting a national search to find a successor to departing Chancellor Mark Perkins, who will begin work next month as president of Towson University in Maryland. A decision is expected in August, with Kuepper serving until the new chancellor is named and arrives on campus sometime during the 2001-02 academic year. It is expected the new chancellor will then have the responsibility of appointing a permanent successor to current Provost and Vice Chancellor Howard Cohen, who is leaving UW-Green Bay July 1 to assume the chancellorship of Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Indiana.

Scientists convene at UW-Green Bay to address critical Great Lakes issues

GREEN BAY-Six hundred scientists from the U.S. and Canada and throughout the world will address critical Great Lakes issues when the International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) meets for its annual conference Sunday through Thursday, June 10 - 14 at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Dr.

IAGLR is the major venue for bringing together information on current research from various disciplines on issues affecting the Great Lakes and other large lakes of the world, according to Prof. David Dolan, Natural and Applied Sciences, conference site co-host.

Yellow perch and cormorants, Lakes Michigan and Superior, food webs and fisheries, wetlands, lake processes and ecosystem health and other "hot" topics are among the 400 scientific papers to be presented. Biologists, chemists, ecologists, environmental specialists, geologists, hydrologists, limnologists, oceanographers, toxicologists and other experts in science and technology are among the presenters.

A forum on the Fox River, "The Fox and Its Future," scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, is free and open to the public. The panel discussion in Rose Hall room 250 will provide opportunity for audience questions. Confirmed panelists include David Ullrich, regional administrator, U.S. EPA, Region V, Wisconsin State Senator Robert Cowles, and Dennis Hultgren of the Fox River Group of paper companies. Invited panelists are Darrell Bazzell, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and William Hartwig, regional director, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

IAGLR conference keynote speakers are James F. Kitchell, director of the UW-Madison Center for Limnology and A.D. Hasler Professor of Zoology in the Graduate School, and Richard L. Thomas, most recently of the Institute F.A. Forel at the University of Geneva, Switzerland.

Kitchell will speak on "Fisheries and Food-Webs in an Ecosystem Context." He has served as coordinator of the Wisconsin Sea Grant program on Living Resources since 1981.

Thomas will address "Linkages Between Science, Decision Making and the Public." Prior to his position in Switzerland, he had served as director of the Great Lakes Water Quality Programme for the International Joint Commission in North America, director of the Great Lakes Institute of the University of Windsor, Ontario, and director of the Ground Water Institute at the University of Waterloo, Ontario.

IAGLR is a scientific organization that promotes research on the North American Great Lakes and other large lakes of the world and communicates findings through publications and meetings. This is its 44th annual conference. Dolan and conference co-host Victoria A. Harris, Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute, say it provides a forum for airing research-based theories about courses of action for restoring the Great Lakes and arriving at consensus.
