UW-Green Bay music camps have openings

GREEN BAY-Openings are available in two University of Wisconsin-Green Bay music camps for middle school students, according to Cindy Hacker, coordinator of youth opportunities in the Office of Outreach and Extension.

Middle School Band and Orchestra camp is July 14 to 20 and Middle School Band and Choral camp is July 21 to 27. Both camps are open to students entering grades 7 through 9 in fall 2002.

"Students who attend will work and study with nationally known guest directors, and they'll give their final concerts in the renowned Weidner Center for the Performing Arts," said Hacker. The final concerts, open to the public, are at 9 a.m. on Saturdays, July 20 and 27.

The director for both camps is Kevin Collins, chair of the UW-Green Bay music program. A member of the UW-Green Bay faculty since 1988, he is director of bands, and conducts the UW-Green Bay Wind Ensemble.

In addition to instrument and voice studies, students can choose daily sessions in topics such as conducting, improvisation, movement and acting for singers, composition, world music and instrument making, and other activities.

Students can enroll as day campers, providing their own daily transportation, or they may live in on-campus University housing, where they'll experience a variety of supervised activities.

Information about the camps is available by calling (920) 465-2267 or 1-800-892-2118.

UW-Green Bay Chancellor pledges support for public TV plan

GREEN BAY - University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard today (Monday, June 24) pledged the University's support for a community effort to continue operation of Wisconsin Public Television's Green Bay Production Unit.

Shepard said he will sign an agreement that will commit UW-Green Bay to continued support of the production facility through rent-free space, utilities and custodial services. The public television production unit is located on the UW-Green Bay campus.

"By signing this agreement, we are showing our support for what has emerged as a clear community priority," Shepard said. "We are happy to have our campus used as a resource by the larger community."

Shepard said UW-Green Bay's in-kind contribution to keeping the facility open will be about $205,000 a year for the next two years.

UW-Extension in March announced plans to close the Green Bay Production Unit June 30 in an attempt to reduce costs while protecting Wisconsin Public Television's core programs.

The Green Bay facility, which has 12 full-time equivalent positions, has been part of UW-Extension since 1990. It has been the primary provider of video production for the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board's Instructional Television unit.

After a public meeting in Green Bay in April, community and state leaders and public television supporters formed a task force to explore ways to keep the production unit open. The task force has developed a two-year funding proposal to continue the unit's operation.

The Chancellor said the effort to keep the Green Bay Production Unit open is a good example of what the community can accomplish when people work together.

"In many ways, this issue has brought out the best in this community," Shepard said. "It shows how deeply people of the Green Bay area care about their community."

Vietnamese scholar begins UW-Green Bay visit

GREEN BAY -- Pham Hong Nhat, a scientist in the Environmental Monitoring and Analysis Division of the Vietnam Institute for Tropical Technology and Environmental Protection, was welcomed to UW-Green Bay at an informal luncheon on Monday, June 10. He is here for a mostly working visit to explore environmental issues in the U.S.

Nhat will spend three weeks in Wisconsin under the auspices of the UW-Green Bay Visiting Asian Scholars Program founded by Professors Emeritus Jack Day and Robert Wenger and their spouses Jan Day and Lena Wenger.

Nhat has been a consultant, team leader and environmentalist on a long list of projects in Vietnam. He has worked in environmental impact assessment, water quality monitoring and management, solid waste management, ecotoxicity studies of chemicals and industrial effluents, and other areas.

Nhat has interdisciplinary expertise. He is pursuing a Ph.D. degree in environmental sociology at Wageningen University in The Netherlands. He has three master's degrees — one in biology from Kharkov State University in the former U.S.S.R., one in environmental engineering from Vietnam National University, and one in environmental science and technology from an institution in The Netherlands and Switzerland — and two bachelor's degrees, including biophysics from Kharkov State, and economics from Ho Chi Minh City University.

In Wisconsin, Nhat will visit the Green Bay wastewater treatment plant, tour the bay of Green Bay and Fox River basin, and visit the UW-Madison Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, among other activities.

He will give a public presentation, "Contemporary Environmental Issues in Vietnam," at noon on Wednesday, June 12 in the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity in Mary Ann Cofrin Hall, room 212.

Nhat is the third visitor to be sponsored by the program founded in 1998 by the Days and the Wengers, whose experiences in Vietnam and China led them to seek a way to bring Asian scholars to UW-Green Bay.

The Days made nearly a dozen trips to Vietnam between 1996 and 1999 while he was technical adviser on a United Nations project to help train staff and upgrade facilities for a provincial environmental agency. Day worked with Nhat in Vietnam. The Wengers have made four trips to China, beginning in 1987-88 when he was a visiting professor at Beijing Normal University.

Nine UW-Green Bay faculty members are promoted

GREEN BAY -- The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents approved promotions for nine University of Wisconsin-Green Bay faculty members at their meeting this week in Milwaukee.

Denise Scheberle and Sandra Stokes were promoted to full professor from the rank of associate professor. Scheberle, a member of the Public and Environmental Affairs faculty, joined UW-Green Bay in 1992. She has served as interim associate dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences since July 2000. Stokes has been on the Education faculty since 1993, and also teaches in the Women's Studies program. She presently is chairperson of Women's Studies.

Seven faculty members were promoted to associate professor, a tenured position, from the probationary rank of assistant professor. They include David Coury, Catherine Henze, Andrew Kersten and Lisa Poupart, all of the Humanistic Studies program; Sally Dresdow, Business Administration; Patricia Ragan, Education; and Thomas Nesslein, Urban and Regional Studies.

Coury, Henze, Ragan and Nesslein have been members of the UW-Green Bay faculty since 1996, and Poupart joined the faculty in 1997. Dresdow and Kersten assumed tenure-track positions in 1998.

Sodexho chosen for UW-Green Bay dining services

GREEN BAY-The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is recommending that a multimillion-dollar contract be awarded to Sodexho Campus Services to provide the University's dining services.

The UW System Board of Regents is expected to give final approval to the dining-services contract at the board's monthly meeting in Milwaukee this week. The contract will take effect Aug. 21.

Sodexho will bring a wide range of dining options to the campus, including nutritional foods, multicultural options and fast-food service, according to Kurt Willmann, UW-Green Bay executive director for business enterprises and project administration.

The company will assume operation of all University dining services operations, which will include Freshens Yogurt, Pizza Hut products and Seattle's Best and/or Starbucks coffee. It also will have made-from-scratch bakery products.

Four vendors submitted proposals in the request-for-proposal process. Sodexho received the highest score and was chosen by an evaluation committee of campus faculty, staff, students and a UW System representative.

"Overall, we felt Sodexho was clearly head and shoulders above the others," Willmann said.

The goal of the process was to create a total dining services program that meets the needs of a diverse student body, faculty and staff as well as an extensive system of camps and conferences on the UW-Green Bay campus.

Sodexho, with its U.S. offices based in Gaithersburg, Md., is a leading food and facilities management services company. The company has a long list of education, corporate and healthcare clients.

The UW-Green Bay contract is expected to last seven years. It is valued at about $2 million a year.

Willmann said Sodexho offered innovative ideas for aggressive marketing and advertising, expanded hours of operation and nutrition education.

UW-Green Bay reviewed its dining services operations as the University prepares for an addition to the University Union where dining services primarily are located. The University requested proposals that included plans to operate before, during and after Union construction.
