Top scholars to lead history seminars at UW-Green BayGREEN BAY - History teachers from Northeastern Wisconsin will have an opportunity again this summer to work with top historians and scholars in an intensive program at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. For the third consecutive summer, UW-Green Bay will offer summer seminars on the teaching of American history. Two weeklong seminars, scheduled for July 31 through Aug. 5 and Aug. 7-12, will stress the latest historical and teaching trends. The summer seminars are part of the Teaching American History program. The program aims to improve teaching, learning and student achievement in history, focusing on grades five through 12. The first seminar will deal with U.S. women's history and American industrialization. The second seminar will focus on Native American history and oral history. Thirty-five teachers of United States history will participate in each seminar, which will feature nationally known scholars and a local expert in curriculum development. Instructors leading the seminars are: • Paul Buhle, a senior lecturer in the American Civilization and History departments at Brown University and distinguished lecturer for the Organization of American Historians. Buhle has written or edited, by himself and with collaborators, 29 volumes on social, intellectual and cultural history. He has won numerous awards for his writings. He also has practiced and taught oral history for 30 years and created several archives. • R. David Edmunds, Watson Professor of American History at the University of Texas at Dallas. Edmunds has written or edited nine books, including "The Potawatomi: Keepers of the Fire," which won the prestigious Francis Parkman Prize. He has held Ford Foundation, Newberry and Guggenheim fellowships and has advised documentary filmmakers, tribal governments, foundations and museums. He currently is president of the American Society for Ethnohistory. • Thomas Dublin, professor of history at the State University of New York at Binghamton. Dublin is a U.S. social historian with an interest in gender, race and ethnicity, and class in the working-class experience. His research has focused on both the industrial revolution in 19th century New England and de-industrialization in the Middle Atlantic region in the 20th century. He is completing a book with Walter Licht, "Facing Industrial Decline: The Pennsylvania Anthracite Region, 1920-1990. • Kathryn Kish Sklar, whose research centers on women in social movements in the United States, comparatively considered with British and German women. Her publications focus on the Antebellum and Progressive eras. She is particularly interested in how women's participation in social movements illuminates large questions in U.S. and comparative history such as those associated with political culture, class formation, state formation, and the construction of gender, religious and ethnic identities. • Linda Pletcher, who teaches unit design for CESA 7 and at UW-Green Bay and St. Norbert College. Pletcher serves as site facilitator for a Comprehensive School Reform Program at Franklin Middle School in Green Bay, She is a past Golden Apple Recipient. The Teaching American History program, now in its third year, is funded by an $822,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. UW-Green Bay professors of American history and staff from CESA 7 collaborated to design the program. Other partners in the program are the Area Research Center at UW-Green Bay's Cofrin Library, the Center for History and Social Change at UW-Green Bay, Heritage Hill State Park, the Neville Public Museum of Brown County and Voyageur: Northeast Wisconsin's Historical Review. Workshop for small businesses will focus on selling to federal governmentGREEN BAY - Small businesses will have an opportunity to learn more about selling to the federal government at a workshop Thursday, July 28 at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Downtown Learning Center. The free workshop, which will run from 8 a.m. to noon, will provide information about what it takes to sell to the federal government, obtaining federal contracts and making sales presentations to the appropriate people. The workshop is sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration, the UW-Green Bay Small Business Development Center, the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and the Business Procurement Assistance Center. The UW-Green Bay Downtown Learning Center is located on the first floor of Washington Commons at Main and Washington streets. The federal government purchases goods and services valued at more than $200 billion a year. About $46 billion is purchased from small businesses, including minority- and women-owned businesses. Among the speakers at the workshop will be Tena Hendrickon, owner of Continuum Design of De Pere. Hendrickson will discuss the success her interior design business has had in selling to the federal government. In addition to providing basic information about selling to the government, the workshop will prepare attendees for the national Business Matchmaking event Sept. 14 in Milwaukee. At the Business Matchmaking event, small businesses will have opportunities to make sales presentations to procurement representatives from government agencies and major corporations. Pre-registration for the July 28 workshop is required. Online registration is available at http://www.uwgb.edu/sbdc/sellGovt.htm. For more information about the free workshop, contact Doug Gjerde, director of the UW-Green Bay Small Business Development Center, by phone at (920) 496-2115 or by e-mail at gjerded@uwgb.edu. Students from Milwaukee School of Engineering, Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Ripon College will launch, track and retrieve a high-altitude balloon that will carry its payload 100,000 feet or higher. The launch is scheduled to take place at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday (July 16) at the athletic fields on the UW-Eau Claire campus. The western Wisconsin location was selected because the geography, roads and prevailing winds are favorable for tracking the payload and a dry-land "splashdown" up to 100 miles from the launch site. The satellite project is funded through a $100,000 grant the National Aeronautics and Space Administration awarded to the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium. The grant supports student-designed satellites and satellite payload projects. The Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium, based at UW-Green Bay, has 32 members including colleges and universities, private businesses, state agencies, educational organizations and other groups. Members of the launch team are Steven Belter (flight director), MSOE; Jennifer Bustamante, Marquette University; Katrina Faucett, UW-La Crosse; Ann Hartwig, MSOE; Dan Haeg, MSOE; and Brian Kaster, Marquette University. The science payload team includes Meary Barbeau, MSOE; Mark Cichon, MSOE; Daniel Croisant, MSOE; Matt Dictus, MSOE; Thomas Hanlon, Ripon College; and Eric Storvik, MSOE. The faculty adviser is Angela King of the MSOE Mechanical Engineering Department. Dr. R. Aileen Yingst, director of the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium, said the project is designed to give students practical experience in aerospace engineering and science. "We want to, as much as possible, re-create what it's like to do a space mission," she said. "And we want that experience to be something they designed themselves." The payload team will measure levels of mercury present at various altitudes in the atmosphere. The team also will test solar cell responsiveness at various altitudes and record detailed measurements to determine the altitudes, temperatures and pressures reached. The results of experiments will provide valuable data on the composition and nature of the upper atmosphere. Yingst said the students expect an exciting morning as they track the satellite and attempt to retrieve the payload after it lands. The launch will be re-scheduled for Saturday, July 23 if conditions are not calm and clear the morning of July 16. (News media are invited to cover the launch and tracking of the student-designed satellite. For more information, contact the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 920-465-2108.)
