Student musicians will take part in UW-Green Bay Jazz Fest
GREEN BAY-About 300 high school and middle school students from Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula will participate in a full day of clinics, master classes and rehearsals during the Saturday, Jan. 26 Jazz Fest at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Dr. Two of the student jazz ensembles selected as "outstanding" will open the final concert beginning at 4 p.m. in the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.
Jazz Fest, now in its 38th year, has historically given young musicians in jazz and vocal jazz ensembles and jazz combos an opportunity to learn and work with professional musicians, University faculty, and University student musicians, says UW-Green Bay Director of Jazz Studies John Salerno. The line-up of professionals always includes one "name" musician, represented this year by saxophonist Ed Calle, whose credits include two Grammy-nominated solo recordings and performances on Grammy-award winning recordings by Arturo Sandoval and others.
Schools with jazz ensembles, combos or vocal jazz ensembles participating in the 2008 Jazz Fest, along with their directors, are:
Ashwaubenon High School, Marc Jimos; Beloit Memorial High School, Chris Behrens; De Pere High School, Chris Andersen and Casey Schmidt; Fond du Lac High School, Dale Shipe; Gladstone (Michigan) High School, Bill Sjoquist; Greenville Middle School, Susie Patch; Hortonville Middle School, Larry Manley; Lombardi Middle School (Green Bay), Joe McCabe; Luxemburg Middle School, Paul Gregg; Notre Dame Academy (Green Bay), William Hill; Pius XI High School (Milwaukee), Tim Karth; Pulaski Middle School, Timothy Kozlovsky; Pulaski High School, Ryan Alban; Shawano High School, Christopher Kent; Waukesha West High School, Matt Mueller; and Wisconsin Lutheran High School (Milwaukee), Patti Bailey.
