GREEN BAY- The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Students In Free Enterprise team returned to campus as winners in the SIFE USA Regional Competition on March 26 in Minneapolis.

After presenting a report of its year-long community outreach projects to a panel of business leaders, the UW-Green Bay SIFE team earned second runner-up in the overall competition. The community projects focused on financial management and global interdependency, in addition to promoting a greater awareness of how market-based economies function.

The event was one of 16 SIFE USA Regional Competitions held across the United States in March and April.

During this academic year, the UW-Green Bay SIFE team organized seven projects in the Green Bay community. Among them, the team organized and held two "International Business Day," events which taught local middle school students about globalization and international independence. Participants in the International Business Day events came from Our Lady of Lourdes School in De Pere and Washington Middle School in Green Bay. The team was also involved with Green Bay's "Money Smart Week," which focused on the importance of saving and investing money. Money Smart Week involved a variety of community organizations conducting events that drew participants from throughout the greater Green Bay region.

Receiving the award on behalf of the SIFE team were students Peter Rudd, La Crosse; Paul Gazdik, Oconto; Chrystal Schliefer, Beloit; Shannon Kindermann, Oshkosh; Danyel Vincent, Mayville; and Kayla Palazzolo, Green Bay; along with Prof. John Stoll, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Prof. Ismail Shariff, Urban and Regional Studies.

SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on more than 1,400 university campuses in 48 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that focus on market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills, and business ethics.

The UW-Green Bay team has about 50 active student members.
