Panel to discuss homelessness in Green Bay

GREEN BAY-A panel of speakers will discuss how homelessness affects a community at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6 at the Salvation Army, 626 Union Court, Green Bay.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Social Work Program is sponsoring the free event. Childcare will be provided.

Organizers hope the forum will change the perception of the homeless in Green Bay and spark a more positive dialogue within the city concerning the issue.

The speakers include Karina O'Malley, who works with the homeless through Community Voices in Action; Alison Draheim, a school social worker with the Green Bay School District; Christi Engels, a local woman facing foreclosure; Steve Herro, social concerns director from the Catholic Diocese; Brown County Supervisor Rich Langan; and Kathy McMurray, chairwoman of the Brown County Homeless Coalition.

The UW-Green Bay senior Social Work class is holding the event in the honor of the late Anne Kok, the UW-Green Bay associate professor who died Feb. 4, 2008, following a car accident.

The public is invited to express their opinions and ask the panel questions about homelessness.
