UW-Green Bay jazz groups to present March 5 concert

GREEN BAY-The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Jazz Ensemble and Vocal Jazz Ensemble will share a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5 in the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts on the campus at 2420 Nicolet Dr. John Salerno directs the Jazz Ensemble and Chris Salerno directs the Vocal Jazz group.

Numbers on the program for the 15-member Vocal Jazz Ensemble include "Joy," arranged by Green Bay native Todd Buffa; Jerome Kern's "All the Things You Are"; George Gershwin's "Summertime"; Kern and Otto Harbach's "Yesterdays"; and "The Boy from New York City" as sung by Manhattan Transfer. They'll be backed up by a four-person rhythm section including Zach Grusznski on guitar, Ben Hogan on drums, Tracy Pachan on bass and Megan Resop on percussion.

Student vocalists also will be featured in numbers with the Jazz Ensemble, including Lisa Andre on "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," and Jacob Kaltenberg on "The Girl I Dream About." John Salerno arranged both selections as well as "Get Out of Town," on which Chris Salerno will perform the vocals.

Saxophonists Nick Boreen, Chris Firkus and Seth Jorgensen, and guitarist Zach Grusznski will be featured with Jazz Ensemble on Chick Corea's "Spain." Jorgensen also will have the feature slot on "Silverado."

Joining in with the Jazz Ensemble will be faculty musicians John Salerno, Terry O'Grady, Adam Gaines and Stefan Hall.
