UW-Green Bay offers summer camps for middle school musiciansGREEN BAY-Registration is open now for University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Middle School Band, Orchestra and Choral Camps scheduled Sunday through Saturday, July 13-19 on the University campus, 2420 Nicolet Dr., Green Bay. Students entering grades six through nine in fall 2008 are eligible to enroll. The summer event for middle school students is celebrating its 43rd year.
Students may choose to focus on band, orchestra or choral experiences. Eighth and ninth grade band students will audition for placement in Phoenix or Honors Bands. Band students entering sixth and seventh grades need not audition for placement in X-Band.
Camp week begins with auditions and an all-camp meeting on Sunday afternoon and concludes with a final concert at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 19 in the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. Daily sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. with the final hour of the day devoted to elective activities such as camp chorus or instrumental ensembles. Outstanding students will be chosen to receive partial scholarships to the 2009 camp.
UW-Green Bay Director of Bands Kevin Collins directs the camp. At UW-Green Bay he conducts the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band and teaches conducting and studio low brass. He is a frequent guest conductor, speaker, clinician and adjudicator, and has conducted honor bands throughout the Midwest as well as middle and high school bands, youth orchestras, community bands, and college and professional ensembles. His bachelor's degree in low brass, trombone performance and music education is from the University of Michigan and his master's degree in wind conducting is from the University of Texas, Austin. He has done additional study at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Camp teachers and conductors of the various ensembles include UW-Green Bay faculty members along with top teachers and performers from around the country.
Students may choose to attend Middle School Camps as commuters or residents. The fee for commuters is $279 and includes instruction and camp tee shirt. Commuters and their parents are responsible for providing their own daily transportation and lunches. Purchase of a meal card is one lunch option.
The $549 resident fee also includes room and board, counselor supervision during all non-class hours, and transportation to evening activities.
