UW-Green Bay announces senior high school music campsGREEN BAY-Senior high school musicians can enroll now for Senior High School Band, Orchestra and Choral Camps scheduled Sunday through Saturday July 20-26 at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Dr., Green Bay. Students entering grades nine through 12 in fall 2008 are eligible to enroll. Summer 2008 is the camp's 43rd year.
Students will select the band, orchestra or choir track. Band students will be assigned by audition to Honors Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band. A new enrichment option for choir students this year offers instruction in musical theater and joint performance with the All-Camp Chorus at the final concert. The musical theater option is limited to 20 students.
The camp week begins with auditions and an all-camp meeting on Sunday afternoon and ends with a final public performance at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 26 in the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. Outstanding students will be selected to receive partial scholarships to the 2009 camp. Daily camp sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. with the final hour devoted to individual interest classes.
UW-Green Bay Director of Bands Kevin Collins directs the camp. At UW-Green Bay he conducts the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band and teaches conducting and studio low brass. He is a frequent guest conductor, speaker, clinician and adjudicator, and has conducted honor bands throughout the Midwest as well as middle and high school bands, youth orchestras, community bands, college and professional ensembles. His bachelor's degree in low brass, trombone performance and music education is from the University of Michigan and his master's degree in wind conducting is from the University of Texas, Austin. He has done additional study at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Camp teachers include UW-Green Bay faculty members along with top teachers and performers from around the country. Conductors include Rich Fischer of Concordia University, Illinois, for Honors Wind Ensemble; Scott Wright of the University of Kentucky and former UW-Green Bay faculty member for Symphonic Band; Janis Peterson, director of orchestras for Marquette (Michigan) Area Public Schools for Orchestra; and Randall Meder, UW-Green Bay director of choral activities for the Phoenix Chorale. UW-Green Bay faculty member Benjamin Brecher will work with the musical theater track students and conduct their performance.
Students may choose to attend Senior High School Music Camps as commuters or residents. The fee for commuters is $279 and includes instruction and camp tee shirt. Commuters and their parents are responsible for providing their own daily transportation and lunches. Purchase of a meal card is one lunch option.
The $549 resident fee also includes room and board, counselor supervision during all non-class hours, and transportation to evening activities.
