UW-Green Bay honors Kiefer with 'Honorary Alumna' statusGREEN BAY - Irene Kiefer, a former administrator and staff member who contributed to the growth of community and alumni relations over a 30-year career at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, will be recognized with “Honorary Alumna” honors at the Alumni Association's annual awards night on campus Saturday, April 19.
Kiefer concluded her University service in September 2000 as executive director of the Office of Marketing and University Communication. A graduate of Indiana University, she had joined the University's news bureau in 1970 after working as a reporter and editor for the Honolulu Advertiser and the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
The “Honorary Alumna” award recognizes her career achievements including a six-year period during the 1990s in which she assumed the additional title of executive director of alumni relations.
During that period, she oversaw an increase in the Alumni Association's membership base and expansion of its range of services. Among new initiatives during her tenure were creation of the credit-card affinity program, a dedicated scholarship golf outing, alumni outreach to target specific academic programs and their graduates, and more sophisticated electronic database management.
Kiefer originated the institutional magazine Inside UW-Green Bay, and she was also instrumental in the growth and development of the Founders Association, the private philanthropic organization. Reporting to Associate Chancellor Donald Harden, she contributed to community relations, events management and communication over a two-decade span in which the growing University raised more than $20 million in annual and capital gifts. She received the Founders Association Award for Excellence in Academic Support.
Following her University career, she served as executive director of the YWCA Green Bay-De Pere and as advancement director for the Einstein Project.
Chancellor Bruce Shepard will make the “Honorary Alumna” presentation to Kiefer on behalf of the University. Alumni Association Awards Night is open to the public, April 19 in the Phoenix Room of the University Union on the campus at 2420 Nicolet Drive. The event begins with a reception at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and the recognition program to follow.
Tickets are $25 per person. To reserve tickets, contact the Alumni Office at (920) 465-2586 or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
