Monteverdi's 'L'Orfeo' opera performed by UW-Green Bay studentsGREEN BAY-The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Opera Studio will present Claudio Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo," at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, April 18-19, at the University Theater on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.
This performance, which will be sung in English, blends dance, theater and music into an "engaging version of Monteverdi's masterpiece," said Prof. Benjamin Brecher, music and stage director.
"The students have embraced this style of music, and I am happy we can bring this Baroque opera to life in Green Bay," Brecher added.
Twenty-five UW-Green Bay students will participate in "L'Orfeo," considered by many to be one of the earliest operas.
Cyndie Shepard choreographed the performance with the sets, costumes and lighting designed by the UW-Green Bay Theater Discipline.
Also contributing to the performance are Adjunct Instructor Mary Slavek on harpsichord and organ, Prof. Catherine Henze, on viola de gamba and Prof. Adam Gaines on trumpet.
This will be the last performance directed by Brecher at UW-Green Bay before he becomes head of the voice program at the University of California-Santa Barbara.
Advance tickets are $6 for adults or $4 for UW-Green Bay students. Prices at the door are $7 for adults and $5 for students.
