UW-Green Bay Habitat for Humanity holding Shanty Town fundraiser

GREEN BAY-A "Shanty Town" fundraiser, sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Habitat for Humanity chapter, will shed light on the plight of the homeless.

The Shanty Town event is set for Friday evening, April 25, through Saturday morning, April 26, at Bay Evangelical Covenant Church, 2280 Nicolet Drive.

Come with a group, or by yourself, and spend the night outside in a self-made cardboard shanty to raise awareness and benefit the construction of a future Habitat for Humanity home in the Green Bay area.

For $6, a single person gets one roll of duct tape and five pieces of cardboard to build a shanty shelter. A group of 2-4 people gets one roll of tape and 10 cardboard pieces for $10. Groups of 5 or more get two rolls of tape and 10 cardboard pieces for $15.

A meal is provided.

Registration is at the church between 4 and 5 p.m. Friday. Shanty building is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with dinner afterward. Also during that time, informational booths will be set up with representatives from various shelters, housing agencies and campus students groups to talk about the issues of homelessness, affordable housing options and more. Guest speakers will start at 7:30 p.m.

Those interested only in visiting the booths and listening to the speakers can come at no cost.
