Craig Mueller, 1943-2007
In 2002 this magazine
featured a cover profile on Craig Mueller, Class
of ’71. The headline “One in a Million.”
was appropriate: Mueller’s life included
America’s Cup sailing, work as a commercial
pilot, recovery from a debilitating accident, and
a second career as a philanthropist. In 2006 he
received the Chancellor’s Award, the University’s
highest community honor. He established a substantial
planned gift for student scholarships, made a dollar-for-dollar
match in the alumni phone-a-thon, and supported
restoration of historic Lambeau Cottage on the
campus bayshore. “Captain Craig” died
Sept. 8 in San Diego; UW-Green Bay hosted a memorial
gathering Oct. 13 for hometown friends including
Chancellor Bruce Shepard, who remembered him as
“a remarkable man.”
