Alumni
play for heroes
at big Medal concert
Alumni of UW-Green
Bay’s highly regarded music program contributed
to a patriotic campus/community tribute concert
at the Weidner Center. The occasion was a national
gathering of America’s most-honored military
veterans — the several dozen surviving recipients
of Congressional Medal of Honor awards from the
WWII, Korean and Vietnam eras. The orchestra that
played for the vets and a near-capacity crowd included
numerous alumni players. Posing backstage were
Luann Glielmi ’78, clarinet; Mona Christensen
’80 and ’96, flute; Brent Hussin ’84,
trumpet; Kevin Van Ess ’84, clarinet; Emily
Roberts; Amy (Harmann) Johnson ’94, clarinet;
Anthony Alvarado-Ortiz ’07, tuba; Bill Dennee
’91, trombone; and Bruce Reines.

President
Bush visits
Diego Garcia....and Paul Struss
Paul Struss of Green Bay is a student of history
— a Class of 2005 summa cum laude student
of history, in fact — so he is no doubt preserving
this photograph for posterity. Struss had the opportunity
to meet and talk with President George W. Bush
when the commander in chief made a Labor Day visit
to his duty station: the U.S. Navy support base
on the remote island of Diego Garcia in the Indian
Ocean. Struss and his fellow Seabees (Naval Mobile
Construction Battalion 7) also greeted Secretary
of State Condoleeza Rice, who was en route with
Bush to a Pacific Rim economic conference. Struss
was a standout cross-country runner for the Phoenix
during his campus years.
