Young alumni learn, teach economic development

Naletta Burr, Class of ’98, (right) is executive
director of On Broadway Inc., the highly visible
effort to encourage redevelopment of downtown Green
Bay’s near West Side business district.
“The assessed value
here has gone from $29 million to $70 million,
and we’re looking at projects that could
add another $75 million,” Burr says. “We
pride ourselves on sustainability, on bringing
things to life for the people who live and work
here, while also retaining the history.”
Quasan Shaw ’97 (left)
has worked in real estate and small business as
owner of both Synergize Development Group and Teaosity,
the specialty shop he operates with his wife, Reva.
“The key to economic
development is something I learned at UW-Green
Bay,” he says. “Spatial analysis. Transportation,
schools, housing, retail…all these sectors
are interconnected. Analyze how they fit together.”
Burr and Shaw, graduates of
the Urban and Regional Studies program, are emblematic
of the fact that young alumni from a broad array
of majors contribute daily to N.E.W. (Northeast
Wisconsin) growth. They are also among the alumni
UW-Green Bay brings back as ad hoc lecturers in
planning, communication, business, accounting and
other fields, to share their real-world experiences
with today’s students.
