Dr. Edward W. Weidner
1921-2007
". . . Grief
not, nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk as if I were beside you . .
.
I loved you so — 'twas Heaven here with you."
— Isla Paschal Richardson
The
University of Wisconsin-Green Bay lost its founder,
first chief executive and biggest fan this past
June with the passing of Dr. Edward W. Weidner.
He was 85.
Weidner arrived in October
1966 to oversee creation of a new four-year campus
for Northeast Wisconsin. He was the first employee
and driving force, the architect who oversaw development
of the bayshore campus and its groundbreaking curriculum,
and assembled a national-caliber faculty and staff.
If you were one of 7,600 alumni
who received your UW-Green Bay diploma prior to
May 1986, Chancellor Weidner shook your hand as
you crossed the stage. He presided over 33 commencement
ceremonies, and his 20 years as chancellor rank
among the longest tenures in UW System history.
A memorial fund was established in his name at
UW-Green Bay. Ed Weidner asked that the following
quote be shared upon his passing:
“…Grieve
not, nor speak of me with tears,
but
laugh and talk as if I were beside you…
I loved you
so – ‘twas Heaven here with you.”
– Isla Paschal Richardson
A UW-Green Bay website with tributes, vintage
photographs (often enlivened by his
colorful choice of neckwear), articles, remarks and
opportunities for alumni and friends to share public
recollections is available at www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/weidner/.
