Chancellor gets good grades

The UWGB community says Shepard has created a positive atmosphere

By Heather Chrudimsky

Over the past 10 months, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard has been the new kid in town and trying his best to fit in as a Phoenix.

Shepard will be formally installed as the fourth chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in a public ceremony Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Shepard assumed his duties as chancellor on Nov. 1, 2001. Since then, faculty, staff and students said they have seen some positive changes within the university.

"He has done a really great job of energizing the campus," said Kevin Collins, associate professor of communication and the arts. "He seems to have fostered a new level of collaboration between the university and the community."

"He actually comes to our (Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee) meetings," said senior Mordecai Fayas, a member of the SUFAC board. "He really wants to work with students to see what students feel and put it into action. You can really tell the difference from the past chancellor (Mark Perkins, who left for the same position with Towson State University in Maryland). He gets more involved with the students."

Many students, faculty and staff said Shepard has given the campus community a lift and creates a positive atmosphere.

"He is very personable and down-to-earth," said Audrey Hanson, program assistant for the International Education office. "He shows a lot of caring. He stops by just to talk to the international students. It is obvious that the atmosphere is more upbeat and happier."

"It is a 180-degree turn between Shepard and the previous chancellor," said junior Shawn Pollack. "We actually see the administration now. He just sits down with you and asks you how things are going. I see in the future rather than students being told how things are going to run, their input will matter."

Student Ryan Byrne said he likes that Shepard has open office hours allowing students bring him their concerns, opinions or just to talk. "He is very approachable for students," said senior Ryan Byrne. "The biggest change is that he is highly visible. His leadership can be defined as being more open with students."

Trudy Jacobson, advisor for UWGB's extended degree program, said that Shepard attempted to make an effort to be part of the university community as soon as he arrived.

"He is learning," Jacobson said. "We will start to see changes begin. We are on top of a budget situation and he has worked hard on that." Illene Noppe, professor of human development, said there is more positive energy coming from the administration and a stronger relationship between faculty and administration.

"He has a strong sense of respect for (the faculty and staff)," said Noppe. "He comes from an academic background and knows what the issues are."

Noppe said that any changes that Shepard makes won't happen over night. Changes in a n institution come very slow.

"He has a really good sense of where the school has been and where it needs to be headed," Noppe said.
