Phoenix Phacts test competitors

Quiz bowl part of UWGB festivities

For an hour on Monday, students, faculty, academic staff and administrators shined in a new way at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

They were engaged in the Phoenix Phacts Challenge, a quiz bowl that included a panel of 17 people who were asked questions about the 37-year-old campus.

Spectators packed themselves into the Nicolet Room and watched the four teams, including a celebrity guest, founding chancellor Ed Weidner, answer questions about sports, current events, history, academics, student life and more.

To welcome new chancellor Bruce Shepard, this week is designated as inauguration week at the college and includes several days of student-focused activities.

"We wanted something fun and informal to go along with the formal part of the inauguration week," said Anne Buttke, director for the university union.

"It's a fun way to learn about where the campus has been, where it's at and where it's going," said Kelly Loasching, manager of programs and promotions for the union.

Here are some of the questions and answers heard during the challenge:

Q. What is the name of the new venue where our men's basketball team will play their home games and what local furniture manufacturer is led by its namesake?

A. Resch Center and KI, Krueger International

Q. What is the university's median class size for lectures?

A. 27

Q. Who was the first chancellor of the university?

A. Ed Weidner

More this week

With inauguration week in full swing at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay to welcome new Chancellor Bruce Shepard, numerous programs and festivities are scheduled.

Some include:

• All week, campus archival displays will be out, showing photos and facts from the school's history.

• Food, prizes, free stuff and more will be open to students at Schmuzefest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Phoenix Rooms lobby.

• Also on Wednesday, students can get involved in organizations at Org Smorg in the Phoenix rooms from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• On Thursday, a dance will be held in the Phoenix rooms from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m.
