October 16, 2003 Editorial: The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and the Green Bay area community
had reason to celebrate this week.
The occasion was the establishment of the John P. Blair Endowed Chair
in Communications at UW-Green Bay, its first fully funded chair. It will
allow the school to offer new courses, more and smaller sections in existing
courses and expanded research opportunities and internships with area
employers.
Annual interest from the $1.5 million gift from Blair's widow, Dorothy
Blair, and the Blair Foundation will underwrite a new faculty position
reserved for a distinguished professor in communications and media.
The Blairs owned an advertising conglomerate that John Blair started
himself. They weren't from Green Bay but had an affection for the university
and the area.
Their gift was to go to the school as part of Dorothy Blair's will.
But she decided instead to make the money available immediately.
The couple's generosity will return dividends to the UW-Green Bay community
for years to come.
