May 25, 2003 UWGB grads encouraged to be involved citizens By Terry Anderson
The "intellectual muscle" students have trained will be needed to contribute
to the economy, but also to preserve our nation, Lawton said, speaking
at the 2003 spring commencement ceremony.
Lawton, the first woman elected lieutenant governor, encouraged the
700-plus graduates to remain active, involved citizens.
"You will one day govern this society," Lawton said. "We need you to
be judicious and wise."
A former UWGB student and longtime friend of the school, Lawton reflected
upon the campus of today and her college day.
But she noted that some things haven't changed.
"The restless pursuit of excellence connecting learning to life
as Chancellor (Bruce) Shepard reminds us still drives the institution's
work," Lawton said.
This was the 33rd spring commencement for UWGB. In that time more nearly
21,000 diplomas have been awarded.
Also speaking Saturday was Gerald Randall, a member of the UW Board
of Regents, professor Jerrold Rodesch, retiring secretary of the faculty
and academic staff, student speaker Christopher Barlow of Green Bay and
Outstanding Student Award recipient Chad Griepentrog of Spencer.
Chancellor's awards were presented to Thomas Olson and the family of
Gary Weidner.
Olson is a member of the Chancellor's Council of Trustees and has been
associated with the school for 15 years.
Weidner's wife, Ellen, accepted the award on behalf of her husband Gary,
who died earlier this year.
His association with UWGB dated back to childhood when his father, Edward
Weidner was the school's first chancellor.
