September 14, 2004 UWGB students have a lot in Commons By Elaine Kauh The opening of the center, on the west side of Washington Commons, marks
a new use for the mall, which has lost most of its retail tenants and
is redeveloping as a multiuse facility.
Various classes are booked at the 2,600-square-foot facility, and the
schedule is frequently updated. So frequently, in fact, that its online
calendar is the only way to keep everything up to date, said Bob Skorczewski,
the center's director.
"It's always going to be around the needs of faculty, staff and students,"
he said.
Numerous UWGB programs have booked the center, including the Leadership
Development Institute, Emergency Management Certificate Program, Human
Resources Management Series and Management Development Series.
On Monday, 15 students began the first session for the Human Resources
Management Series.
The classroom is spacious and well-equipped, said Ernie Johnson, who
conducts the class as manager of business counseling at UWGB's Small Business
Development Center.
Johnson expects to use the new center regularly. Previously, the series
was held in a smaller room at the Advance Business Development Center
in Ashwaubenon.
Michelle Faust visited Washington Commons for the first time to attend
the class. While she was surprised to see the center in an empty mall
wing, she liked the setting which allowed the students to sit cafe-style
in front of the center to eat a catered lunch.
"The location is great and the room is nice," said Faust, who is corporate
human resource senior administrative assistant at Plexus Corp. in Neenah.
The university has a five-year lease for the space with the owner of
Washington Commons, Development Associates LLC.
The center features a classroom for up to 48 students, conference room,
office and reception area.
