December 7, 2004 School Zone: By Cynthia Hodnett But for 18-year-old Crystal Salas, a major move has provided an opportunity
to attend college, meet new people and volunteer.
Salas, a freshman and elementary education major at the University of
Wisconsin-Green Bay, moved with her family to Green Bay from Weslaco,
Texas, in June.
The family's decision to move came months earlier while visiting a relative
who was already living here. At that time, Salas toured UWGB's campus.
"I was already enrolled in college in Texas when my mother and father
got a job here," Salas said. "I was wondering if I should apply (at UWGB).
It was late and I didn't know if there was still time to get in. When
they told me that I was accepted, I was very happy."
Shortly after her family settled in Green Bay, Salas began volunteering
at church and school including at St. Willebrord Catholic Church, where
she teaches a class for 5- and 6-year-olds. She's also involved with the
church's youth group and sings in several choirs.
Salas had earned 11 college credits by the time she graduated with honors
from high school. She's taking seven classes at UWGB this semester.
She's also a mentor for the college's Phuture Phoenix program, which
exposes grade school students to the university and encourages them to
pursue a college education.
"I really like working with the little kids because they are so fun
to be around," Salas said. "I guess I can see a little bit of them in
me."
