UWGB staffer on system president search committee

Kathy Pletcher has worked for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for 28 years, but none of the previous 27 has been like this one.

That's because she has been thrust into a significant role in the UW System's search for a successor to President Katharine Lyall.

Pletcher, associate provost for information services at UWGB, is one of 18 people on the search and screen committee. The task is to compile a short list of candidates to be handed off to the Regent Selection Committee by early July.

"We're on a fast track," said Pletcher, who is the only non-teaching academic staff member on the committee. "It's very exciting but there is the sense of responsibility that the work we're doing is important. There are many challenges ahead and the next president has to be an outspoken advocate for the university."

Pletcher has high praise for Lyall, who will leave her post later this summer.

But she said that she and fellow committee members are approaching their task with open minds.

"We wanted to have as large and broad a pool as possible," she said. "The job description doesn't even say the candidates must have a Ph.d. We wanted to think outside the box."

Confidentiality has been a major emphasis. Committee members cannot take candidate files home with them but must do all their reading at the Van Hise Hall office of UW administration.

The committee has whittled the candidate list from its original total, and is checking out references. The next step will be interviews, before the slate of candidates passes to the regents in no order of priority.

"By the end of June, we should be done," Pletcher said.
