UWGB students socialize over corn, Packers

It's hard to impress members of the opposite sex when one has sweet corn stuck in one's teeth.

Not that anyone was trying.

Maybe that was the very reason University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's Student Life chose the juicy, spurting starch as the main fare at a Green Bay Packers party on campus Monday night.

Or it could be it's in season and it's cheap.

Either way, the students didn't seem to mind the messy foodstuff or the balmy, breezy, 77-degree summer night or the opportunity to get together and meet their fellow students.

They didn't even seem to mind when the outdoor projection screen didn't work at first, forcing them to miss out on most of the pre-game highlights.

Reid Thomas, 18, of Marshfield, wasn't worried.

"Just roll somebody's TV up to a window and we can watch from here," he said, standing in the grassy area outside Josephine Lenfestey Hall.

Even with hands slippery with grease, he pronounced the hot, roasted corn fresh out of its flaking black husks and dripping with liquefied butter as "definitely tasty."

Nor was Stephanie Richards, 18, of Fredonia worried about the lack of pre-game viewing.

"I don't like football," she confessed, adding that she came for the free corn and the opportunity to socialize.

She suppressed the urge to wipe her buttery hands on her pants.

Her roommate, Mera Kidney of Montello, said the two are opposites in some respects.

"I love football," she said, "and I've never had corn on the cob before. My mom always cuts it off the cob for me."

Ashley Koehne, 19, of Pulaski, said she loves what she's seen of college life thus far.

"There's no way you can't have fun when your whole community is teens," she said.

The Packers corn roast party was the last of the welcome-to-campus events of the new school year hosted by UWGB Student Life.

About 40 to 50 students were on hand to savor the food, hang out with schoolmates and delight in the Packers season opener.

The dozens of Student Life events so far this year have included an outdoor viewing of "Shrek 2," a comedian, live concerts, a craft night and a game show night, according to Director of Student Life Lisa Tetzloff.
