Quigley plans to step down as Bayfest director

UWGB officials continue to evaluate athletic fund-raiser

This year's Bayfest was Tim Quigley's last.

The director of the popular summer festival, which raises money for UWGB athletic scholarships, for all of its 25 years told the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Wednesday he would not seek an extension of his contract, which expires Sept. 30.

"It seemed like an ideal time at 25 years to say that I've done it long enough,'' said Quigley, 65. "I'm looking at this as an opportunity to do something else. I have no intentions of retiring.''

No decision about Bayfest's future has been made, said UWGB athletics director Ken Bothof. As they do after each Bayfest, Bothof said, he and Quigley are evaluating this year's event and looking at what may be next.

"Certainly, through the years Bayfest has had a big impact on the scholarship dollars provided to the athletics department,'' Bothof said. "It's a great story for what he (Quigley) has been able to accomplish in those 25 years.''

Bayfest has generated more than $2 million for scholarships since it started in 1980, Quigley said. The festival hit some of its worst weather in the last two years. Despite tornado warnings and rain, this year's festival June 9 to 12 drew 48,000 people and raised $20,000 to $25,000, Quigley said.

UWGB chancellor Bruce Shepard recently told the Green Bay Press-Gazette that he has reservations about the future of Bayfest.

"I have a big question in my mind about Bayfest and whether it's worth all the hours that go into it. It may be a fund-raising approach that has run its course," Shepard said earlier this month.

Quigley said he has been thinking about stepping down in 2005 for the last year, but that Shepard's comments "certainly helped solidify my decision."

Quigley and Bothof have discussed the possibility of new fund-raising ideas that wouldn't be as weather-dependent. Quigley said he would be willing to hire on as a consultant for Bayfest, should it continue, or other fund-raisers.

His wish is that Bayfest, which has become synonymous with June in Green Bay, will continue.

"I would rather not see it just die," Quigley said. "I think it still has a real positive impact on the community. If the university would not want to do it, there are some nonprofit organizations that are interested."

Quigley's departure ends 31 years of employment with UWGB. He was director of promotions for 20 years before retiring in 1997 and hiring back on part-time to continue to oversee Bayfest.
