Web site work earns student Employee of the Year award

University of Wisconsin-Green Bay senior Erica Heckendorf beams with pride when discussing a new Web site she designed for UWGB's Institute for Learning Partnership office.

Heckendorf, who has worked in the office for 14 months, spent three weeks designing the Web site for the office, which connects those in UWGB's master's degree program in education to actual classroom learning.

"I just took down the old Web site and put up the new one with links and pictures," said Heckendorf, 22, an education major. She works in the office 10 hours a week while carrying a full-course load. "This job really helps me remain knowledgeable about computers, which I really like because I love to work on the computer."

It's that type of enthusiasm that recently earned Heckendorf the title of UWGB Student Employee of the Year. The award is given to student employees who demonstrate attributes such as outstanding quality of work, reliability, initiative and professionalism.

"It's a great honor and it shows how much my supervisors really appreciate what I do here," she said. "I love the people who I work with. My bosses help me a lot because they all have an education background."

About 20 students were nominated for the award, said Becky Wendt, student employment coordinator in the Financial Aid Office. Heckendorf received a clock with her name on it and her name engraved on two plaques at the university.

"The university didn't have an easy job in choosing the winner," Wendt said. "We had some really good nominees."

Janet Ludke, program assistant in Institute for Learning Partnership, praised Heckendorf for her dependability and go-getter attitude. Ludke recalls how Heckendorf came in on her off day to help with several tasks.

"Erica is such an outstanding person and she can always be counted on to do a good job," Ludke said. "She's very pleasant to be around and is always willing to go above and beyond what is asked of her."
