Mike Eserkaln, a writer and owner and producer of Comedy City, and Matt Sorenson, a junior and computer science major at UWGB, were among 425 local residents, UWGB students and faculty who submitted creative writings and visual arts work.
Judges selected their work from the top 47 entries in both categories.
Eserkaln's monologue, "Russian Roulette," a dark comedy about a man who accidentally kills himself, was selected as the winner in the creative writing category and will be featured on the first page of the Sheepshead Review journal.
Sorenson's "Delegate," a photograph depicting a dragonfly on top of a cell phone, was selected first in the visual arts category and will be featured on the cover of the Spring 2005 edition of the journal.
Other entries also will be featured in the journal.
The journal was discontinued for a number of years before it was restarted four years ago, said editor-in-chief Kirsten Walker, a UWGB senior. This is the first year the contest has been opened to the public.
Entries from the general public were accepted to draw more advertising dollars and support the university's efforts to connect with the community, Walker said.
"For students, it's something that can go on their resume," she said. "It builds the number of submissions we have for the journal and it's a way for community members to get exposure for their work."
