Women's college soccer: UWGB players lend hand while in Louisiana

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women's soccer team earlier this month put a temporary stop to its attempt to improve its record in favor of an opportunity to improve the lives of Louisiana citizens devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

On Saturday, Sept. 10, UWGB's day off in a three-day tournament hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette, the Phoenix went to the Lafayette Salvation Army and helped distribute clothing and other goods to evacuees of New Orleans and the surrounding areas.

"Those people are just trying to find places to stay, and they've made their way to Lafayette and Baton Rouge and a bunch of other places," UWGB coach Quinn Ross said. "They're just trying to get back to a normal life, and we were just trying to help a little bit with that."

Seeing the victims of the disaster put the tournament and sports in general in perspective for the players and coaches.

"I remember one guy said to me, 'I can't believe that all this stuff is here (at the Salvation Army),' " junior defender Kari Olsen said. "And the people down there needed all of the stuff that was there because they just lost everything."

UWGB was just one of the teams that found time to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Oklahoma State and tournament host Louisiana-Lafayette also spent a majority of their Saturday at the Salvation Army.

Ross and his team were amazed by the number of people affected by the hurricane — and the number of people willing to help.

"I saw two transit workers who were looking for pairs of pants so that they could just be able to go back to work," Ross said. "Everything is still up in the air about what is going to happen, but there are so many people out there helping out to make sure that things can return to normal. The amount of people down there who were just willing to help out was very apparent."
