UWGB Kress Events Center taking shape

New arena set for 2007 opening

GREEN BAY - The construction of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's new sports facility is on schedule — and vital to a plan for growth — school officials and a Miron Construction Corp. representative said.

"We're probably a quarter of the way done, but there are so many phases that it's hard to tell," said Ed Green, a Miron superintendent. "We're on schedule."

The Kress Events Center will open in November 2007, said Dean Rodeheaver, assistant chancellor of planning and budget for the school. It will have a 4,000- to 5,000-capacity seating area for women's volleyball and basketball games, as well as running and racquet sports facilities and offices for the athletic department and sports medicine.

"They have the structural columns poured," Rodeheaver said. "In August, we're planning to start roofing."

The construction is part of chancellor Bruce Shepard's six-year plan to add 2,000 students to UWGB's yearly enrollment. The 2007-08 school year will be the plan's kickoff, and the Board of Regents are considering a budget submitted by school officials.

"To students, it's a high priority to have a place for concerts and commencements. They taxed themselves $15 million to pay for it," Shepard said. "We'll have three classes that graduated and paid for it, but didn't get to use it, which shows how important it is."

Students and community members will benefit once the events center opens, said Sue Keihn, UWGB dean of students.

"It will allow us to expand our intramural program and expand the services we offer to the community. We'll be hosting events, and there will be community memberships, as there are now," she said. "There will also be additional recreation time for students — the facility we have now is pretty heavily scheduled because of the lack of space."

Besides the $15 million from student fees, the $32.8 million budget required about $10 million in donations and about $8 million in state funding.
