March 7, 2006 Editorial: Program promotes learning, bonding
Sometimes an idea is just so cool that it merits special mention.
That's Grandparents' University, a first-time event planned for July 13 and July 14 at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Modeled after a successful program at UW-Madison, the Green Bay version will be a summer camp that introduces kids ages 7 to 14 to the campus and provides quality time with grandparents. The two-day camp will include hands-on classes, a cookout and other meals, optional evening activities, an optional overnight stay in a university residence hall and a graduation ceremony. UWGB alumni, parents of alumni and friends of UWGB are invited to sign up but registration is limited to 55 grandparents and 55 grandchildren.
On a first-come, first-serve basis, they'll take one of five courses: Fiber Arts; Enamel Art; Introduction to Irish History and Culture; Biodiversity; and Forensic Science: Crime Scene Investigation.
If it's Irish history the child and grandparent choose, they'll dance an Irish jig, write a limerick, play a tune on an Irish harp, drum or penny whistle and sing Irish ballads under the guidance of Professor Emeritus Michael Murphy and special guests.
If it's forensic science they sign up for, UWGB Professor Donna Rich and her team will show them techniques of crime scene investigation to solve a mystery, including hair analysis, blood typing and DNA analysis — sort of a Green Bay version of CSI without the body.
The arts classes will include original projects that participants complete during the two-day camp. And the biodiversity class will take people on trail walks and through the Richter Museum of Natural History on campus with museum Curator Thomas Erdman leading the way.
The whole event is just a neat way for grandparents and grandkids to spend some fun time together and for the university to provide a snapshot of what it has to offer to the community.
