Paper center changes its name

Goal is to better reflect services facility provides

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's Paper Technology Transfer Center — which opened a year ago in downtown Green Bay — has changed its name to the Paper Industry Resource Center.

The new name is meant to better reflect the services it provides the paper industry, said David Hollenberg, the center's director.

The center encourages collaborative innovation between the university system and private sector with a goal of promoting economic development for the region, he said.

People had expressed confusion about what technology transfer meant, he said.

"Depending on the organization, technology transfer can mean different things: product development and marketing or licensing of patents.

"We are a center of information for paper processes," Hollenberg said. "That's the message we want to get across to the industry, our other partners and the public."

Hollenberg said the name change does not mean a new direction or emphasis, but to provide greater clarity for what the center already does.

Within a 100-mile radius of Green Bay are more paper manufacturing and converting operations than anywhere else in North America.

The center also recently:

• Received a $29,188 grant to study the impact of single-stream recycling on the quality of fiber materials going to paper mills.

• Applied for a National Science Foundation's Partnerships for Innovation Program grant of $600,000. The grant would be used to develop a curriculum with technical colleges for paper manufacturing students, look for licensing opportunities and study generic issues.

About the center
The UW-Green Bay Paper Industry Resource Center, works to benefit the state and regional economy by helping keep Wisconsin on the cutting edge of paper technology. Based in the Regency Center office building, 333 Main St., Green Bay, it opened in 2005. The center was created under a $500,000 grant from the Small Business Administration through the efforts of U.S. Rep. Mark Green, R-Hobart.
