January 29, 2006 UWGB Master Plan
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is in the process of finalizing its second campus master plan since the university was founded in 1965. Most plan elements have no definite timetable, but the following areas have been identified as the primary planning issues and recommendations:
Circulation and campus navigation
• Create the Inner Loop Road.
Quotable: "(Campus) can be kind of confusing and a little bit off-putting. The sense you have (is), it's a beautiful campus, but it's hard to know how you get into the center part of campus if you're a visitor."
Parking
• Use existing lots to expand parking as needed.
Quotable: "We're respectfully refusing to do that. We're not going to change the orientation and location of parking."
Building opportunities
• Expand the undergraduate residential village.
Quotable: "I was on campus in Madison and they did have a theater there. I felt that was very (helpful) because lots of students there didn't have cars. That'd be nice for the students who do live on campus."
Context/community
• Promote the use of city transit options.
Quotable: "You've got this tremendous facility within our community, and how do we integrate it within the rest of the community, so it's not just sitting as an island separate from the rest of the city of Green Bay?"
Sustainability
• Establish a sustainable development policy and campuswide sustainability committee.
Quotable: "The focus on sustainability has been a part of our tradition since the beginning. I think it's really important that we live up to our words — and so a master plan that has a strong component of sustainability, first of all it makes sense economically ... (and it's) also an educational lesson."
