UWGB undergrads show off work in Madison

MADISON - University of Wisconsin-Green Bay student Jacob Lasee joined undergraduates from 25 other Wisconsin campuses Tuesday at the State Capitol to highlight research projects ranging from tokenism of African-Americans to Lasee's synthesis of biodiesel.

Lasee was one of 15 UW-Green Bay students who displayed their research projects — 113 projects statewide — at the third annual "Posters in the Rotunda: A Celebration of Undergraduate Student Research."

"This work that you see before you elevates the prestige of our UW System," Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton told students, lawmakers, UW-System officials and audience members gathered in the Rotunda for the poster display. "This undergraduate research renews our faith in the possibility of discovery in every field."

Lasee stood next to his poster that detailed the process he used to synthesize biodiesel from used and unused cooking oil. He said he mixed sodium hydroxide with methanol to create sodium methoxide, which produced biodiesel.

He said biodiesel burns hotter and cleaner, and is an alternative source of fuel that has potential to help reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil.

"It's not really cheaper right now because the process kind of takes a little bit of time and not a whole lot of people are doing it now," said Lasee, adding that he sees environmental benefits in creating 50-50 blends of gasoline made of diesel and other agricultural products, such as corn and soybeans.
