Summit to call for diversity action

Event aims to build on foundation of a welcoming community

Samuel Betances overcame an impoverished upbringing in Harlem and eventually earned a doctorate from Harvard University.

"It matters less where we are from — what really matters is where we are going," said Betances, an educator and consultant who will be the keynote speaker Thursday for the first summit on racial and ethnic diversity in Brown County.

Betances will bring his Harlem-to-Harvard message to the Leadership Summit on Diversity: A Call to Action at the Lambeau Field Atrium. The event runs from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Betances strives to help others learn the importance of pulling cultures together as a way of bringing America back to the top — in education, business and society.

"Our mission is to make America stronger, healthier and freer than when we found her," he said.

The summit aims to build on the foundation of a welcoming community for residents and businesses. Participants will discuss diversity initiatives in the area and outline their visions for a diverse Brown County. The gathering will serve as a springboard for collaborative action on the changing face of Brown County's population.

A locally produced video, "Do You Know Your Neighbor?" will feature residents telling their own immigration stories.

Television producer Alex Zacarias said U.S. history is the story of immigrants.

"People from the four corners of the globe now call Green Bay home. It's another way of talking about diversity," Zacarias said.

"Looking at the past tells us where we are today and what the future will be," he said. "If we can agree on that one thing, it could be the first step to working together."

Sponsors of the event are the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the Green Bay Packers, Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce and the Brown County UW-Extension.

Bruce Shepard, UW-Green Bay chancellor, and John Jones, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Packers, will welcome summit participants. The event also will include a dialogue facilitated by chamber President Paul Jadin. Between 300 and 400 people are expected to attend.
