Editorial: UWGB gets good news, bad news

Tuesday was a significant day on the UW-Green Bay campus. In a matter of hours, we learned that:

• Chancellor Bruce Shepard was staying at UWGB and not pursuing the presidency at Western Michigan University.

• Women's basketball coach Kevin Borseth was leaving UWGB to become head coach at Michigan.

It's hard not to feel good about both decisions.

Shepard's decision is good news for the school and the community. He has made an impact here and there is a sense that his work is not completed.

"Green Bay and its University of Wisconsin are like family to Cyndie and me," Shepard said in making his announcement. "We are delighted to be part of that family, and we look forward to continuing to work on many exciting projects and initiatives on campus and in the community."

During their time here, the Shepards have been good for the school and good for the community. We have seen UWGB expand its role in the region.

That Gov. Jim Doyle has chosen to endorse much of the growth agenda for UWGB shows that state officials also are encouraged by Shepard's vision for the future.

Borseth's nine-year record at UWGB speaks for his unique skills. He led the Phoenix to seven NCAA tournaments and an overall winning percentage of 77 percent and a conference winning percentage of over 90 percent.

We were beginning to think Borseth would always coach here. He turned down a more lucrative offer to coach at Colorado two years ago. But in every successful coach there must be a desire to find out how good he can really be. At Michigan, Borseth will find out.

We send him across Lake Michigan with thanks and best wishes.
