UWGB students settle into new homes in dorms

Freshman class moves in to campus

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay came to life Thursday as more than 700 freshmen moved into their new homes.

Armed with shower caddies, space-saving furniture and plenty of clothes, the class of 2011 quickly took the once-tranquil UWGB residence halls by storm.

Parents, students and more than 100 volunteers got an early start Thursday, with official move-in starting at 8:30 a.m. About 730 of UWGB's 1,003 new freshmen will live in the dorms, according to the university.

By about 8:45 a.m., the Eppler family of Racine was making progress in 18-year-old Emily's room in Roy E. Downham Hall. Emily, a Racine Case High School graduate, will study nursing at UWGB.

The family arrived a little later than they'd hoped, but things had gone quickly — with the proper delegation of work, of course.

"I don't think we did too bad," said mom Patty Eppler, placing a brightly colored bedspread on Emily's lofted twin bed. "My husband's out hauling the heavy stuff."

Emily is the family's oldest child, and Patty got a little teary-eyed at the thought of leaving her at school.

"She'll do fine," Patty Eppler said. "Once I'm home, I'll do fine."

Outside Downham Hall, Laurie Svatek, UWGB's Catholic campus minister, was ready to answer questions for sometimes-frazzled students and parents.

Things seemed to be running smoothly, Svatek said, thanks in large part to the contingent of campus volunteers.

UWGB Chancellor Bruce Shepard was among those who showed up to lug boxes.

"The families are so appreciative there's help," Svatek said. "They make two trips, and everything's in."

Once the students were moved in Thursday, the university hosted an 11:30 a.m. parents meeting and a 3:30 p.m. student campus welcome.

Orientation events continue through Sunday, with classes starting Tuesday.

UWGB by the numbers

About 5,800 students are enrolled, including 1,003 freshmen and 660 transfer students.

About 65 percent of freshmen are women.

730 freshmen, and 1,916 students overall, will live in on-campus residence halls.

UWGB is enrolling 393 students of color, including 66 freshmen and 62 transfer students.

Students come from 71 of Wisconsin's 72 counties. Burnett County in northwestern Wisconsin is the exception.

Students come from 37 other states and 26 other countries.

Top feeder high schools for UWGB include Green Bay Preble (287 students), Bay Port (162), Green Bay Southwest (154), Green Bay East (133) and Pulaski (126). UWGB has 192 military veterans, up about 13 percent from previous years.
