December 3, 2007 Editorial: Phuture Phoenix recognized
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's Phuture Phoenix program is receiving some well-deserved national attention.
An article about the program, which encourages at-risk children to believe that higher education is within their reach, is featured in the November issue of the Phi Delta Kappan, the professional journal for educators.
The program grew from a chance conversation between a fifth-grader and Cynthia Shepard, wife of UWGB Chancellor Bruce Shepard. "I'll probably end up in prison like my dad," the 10-year-old told Shepard when asked what he wanted to do with his life.
Shepard asked Jefferson Elementary Principal Maryanne Anderson how the university could help reverse such a glum outlook.
"Role models. We need good role models," Anderson replied.
From that conversation has come an ongoing program that annually involves about 1,000 fifth-graders and 350 university students. And it's more than a one-day campus visit. UWGB "role models" continue to be involved with students as they progress into middle and high school.
It's good that a good program gets national attention, because the challenge of inspiring youngsters goes well beyond Northeastern Wisconsin.
