Report commends safety at UW-Green Bay, St. Norbert

Press-Gazette

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and St. Norbert College in De Pere are among 16 state schools listed as having commendable campus safety practices in an interim report issued by the Governor's Task Force on Campus Safety.

Formed in the wake of the April 16 shooting rampage at Virginia Tech, the state task force issued its report Thursday, the same day a Virginia task force issued a report criticizing that university's sluggish response to the incident that killed 31 people.

The Wisconsin group, co-chaired by UWGB Chancellor Bruce Shepard, had two public sessions and created a set of "best practice criteria" for campus administrators, police and health services staffers.

"The citizens of Wisconsin can take some comfort in our finding that, across the campuses of the state, commendable practices are in place. That is good news," Shepard said in a news release issued by Gov. Jim Doyle's office.

"We also have found that there are opportunities for continuous improvement as we learn from each other."

The interim report focuses on prevention, intervention, response and post-incident followup. It also advises campuses on how to respond to students who show "strange or threatening behavior" and emphasized the importance of recognizing and treating mental illnesses.

Other schools listed as having commendable campus safety practices are Marquette University; Beloit and Lakeland colleges; Madison Area, Northland, Southwestern and Western Wisconsin technical colleges; Milwaukee School of Engineering; and UW campuses at Eau Claire, La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee, Oshkosh and Parkside.

A final report will be submitted to Doyle on Nov. 1.
