November 9, 2007 Anti-smoking forces turn up the heat for ban UWGB considering expanding campus ban By Tony Walter
"I'm working on quitting," said Pophal, a student from Merrill.
UWGB is just one place where area anti-smoking forces are making strides. Limits on outdoor smoking have spread in recent years as nonsmokers have become increasingly active about staying away from cigarette smoke in public places.
"Our organization has always stood behind efforts to remove the chances of people being exposed to secondhand smoke," said Rebecca Derenne, field government relations director for the American Cancer Society's Green Bay office.
Hospitals in Brown County, acting on recommendations from the Wisconsin Hospital Association, have imposed tobacco bans on all hospital property.
"There's no tobacco use, period," said Bellin Hospital spokesman Femi Cole. "That includes in any of the buildings, on the premises, in the parking lot. You can't go on break and smoke in your car."
Sean Schultz, spokeswoman for St. Vincent Hospital, said the ban includes any hospital facilities or vehicles.
"All the hospitals are going that way," Schultz said.
The UWGB student senate is studying the campus smoking policy and might vote to expand it to prohibit smoking within the campus loop at its Nov. 19 meeting. The current smoking policy bans smoking within 30 feet of any door.
"I'm fine with people smoking as long as they don't do it near the student housing," said student Meghan Wickus of Lake Mills.
Sue Keihn, dean of students, said the student senate smoking ban proposal would eventually reach Chancellor Bruce Shepard's office and be presented to the faculty and academic staff governing bodies.
At St. Norbert College, the use of smoking or chewing tobacco is prohibited inside of and within 25 feet around all campus buildings. Tobacco products are not sold through any college outlet, college spokesman Mike Counter said.
At a few area businesses, including Georgia-Pacific, smoking is allowed in designated areas.
Schneider National has a no-smoking policy at all its facilities but does have rooms to accommodate smokers, said Janet Bonkowski, the company's public affairs director.
