UWGB Students Push for Smoke-free Campus

By Kristin Byrne

U.W.-Green Bay could join other Wisconsin university campuses and go smoke-free as soon as next year. That's if university officials accept a recent proposal from the student government.

"Just a couple of weeks ago we had that survey, and we had over 1,300 students respond, and the vast majority — over 65 percent — asked that we have a complete smoking ban on campus," Nick Cibula, vice president of the Student Government Association, said.

Sophomore John Bahde wants to be able to smoke before heading into class, but his smoking could be snuffed if the student government proposal gets the green light from university officials.

"I feel that we can work together and get this so that everybody for the majority is happy," Bahde said.

According to the UWGB web site, 18 percent of students were smokers in 2004. Researching a smoking ban became a priority after students started complaining about secondhand smoke.

The university does have a smoking policy which prohibits smoking 30 feet from the front doors of about half a dozen academic buildings on campus but not all.

You can tell by the cigarette butts that smoking is allowed in front of a good number of buildings under the current policy. According to the Student Government Association, a majority of students don't want to deal with this.

"As a smoker, I think that as long as the students are outside and smoking, there are other ways to get around school without having to walk around clouds of smoke," Bahde said.

The student government president says results of the survey, which was completed March 21st, are being forwarded to the campus's Health and Safety Committee.
