Planning a picnic: invite the deans, several hundred others Details are being finalized, but mark your calendar today for a universitywide picnic from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, outside the University Union. Guests of honor will include outgoing deans Nancy Kaufman and Carol Pollis as well as retirees for the 1999-2000 academic year. Watch for more information. * * * * * UW System graduation rates are above national average The overall graduation rate for the University of Wisconsin System is above the national average, David J. Ward, UW System senior vice president for academic affairs, reported to the Board of Regents Friday. Ward noted that full-time students who start at a UW institution graduate at a rate of 51.8 percent over a six-year period. The national average is estimated to be 47.6 percent. (A quick check of the Institutional Research website shows that UW-Green Bay's most recent cohort is in the ballpark, at 47.0 percent.) They outpolled Christopher Knuth and Doug Rifleman by 505 votes to 254. The turnout, with about 14 percent of the student body casting votes, was up slightly from last year. The Knuth/Rifleman duo fell short despite a rockin' campaign strategy; a photo is online at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm * * * * * Student Senate passes SUFAC plan with facilities component The UW-Green Bay Student Senate voted 16-2 last Monday to endorse a student fees schedule that sets the fall 2000 fee portion of the annual tuition/fee bill at $711 for a full-time Wisconsin resident. The plan includes $100 per student to begin a fund related to the Campus Life for the 21st Century recommendations. Additional details were reported by the Appleton Post-Crescent at http://www.wisinfo.com/postcrescent/news/040500-1.html * * * * * Saturday concert features retiring pianist Cohrs, 'Rhapsody in Blue' Pianist Arthur Cohrs will be featured soloist at a concert by the UW-Green Bay Wind Ensemble, the Symphonic Band, and a High School Honors Band at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (April 15) at the Weidner Center. Cohrs, who is well-known through a career of more than 30 years as a performer, teacher, and lecturer, will retire from teaching at UW-Green Bay at the end of the academic year. He will perform George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" with the Wind Ensemble, directed by Kevin Collins. More. * * * * * UW-Green Bay pow-wow is Saturday night It's a terrific opportunity to appreciate American Indian culture, it's entertaining and it's free! The eighth annual traditional pow-wow organized by the Intertribal Student Council begins with the grand entry at 6 p.m. this Saturday (April 15) at the Phoenix Sports Center. About 1,500 people attended the event last year. Participating drum groups and color guards are from the Menominee, Lac Du Flambeau, Stockbridge-Munsee, and Oneida nations. Featured speakers are Alla Wilson, assistant professor in marketing and BUA, who will discuss her findings on organizational climate and the adoption of technological innovations by hospitals; and Kim Nielson, assistant professor of women's studies and SC&D, who will present her work "Helen Keller and the Politics of Civic Fitness." * * * * * UW System reports enrollment gains for students of color Retention rates and number of degrees conferred for UW System undergraduates of color have steadily increased in recent years, according to a report presented to the System's Board of Regents last week. Over the last decade, the degrees earned by students of color have increased from 910 to 1,731. The conference was held at Indiana University and Purdue University Indianapolis in early March. Fiala will present his paper "The Dialectic of Tolerance: Tolerant Dissent in the Aftermath of the Southworth Case" at a conference on "The Culture of Tolerance" held by the UK Association for Legal and Social Philosophy. This conference will be held at the University of Exeter in Exeter, England on April 6-8, 2000.
