Work proceeds on new academic building; you can see it here

To borrow an oft-repeated phrase from the diaries of Lewis and Clark, work on the new academic building "proceeds on." Early July photos show features of the building taking shape. See the photo page at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/photoarch/building/proceeds.htm

UW-Green Bay: Closed, but still open

Here's clarification on the recent news involving UW-Green Bay being "closed" for admission as of June 30: The announcement pertained only to new freshmen and transfer applicants. Extended Degree? Still open. Specials? Still open. Graduate students? Still open. And, even in the two closed categories, the University will continue to accept and consider, on a case-by-case basis, applications from those with special circumstances or academic abilities. UW-Green Bay is aiming to come within 1 percent of its fall 2000 FTE target of 4,357 full-time equivalent students.

UW System pursues clarification in Southworth

Thought you'd heard the name Southworth for the last time? Well, the state Justice Department and the UW System filed a petition in the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals last Friday to question aspects of the court's decision in the case involving student fees and student organizations. Still at issue are matters of "viewpoint neutrality" and use of student referenda to determine funding. If you're interested, check the UW System web at http://www.uwsa.edu/univ_rel/releases/r0077.htm

UW System announces summit for 'new economy'

The University of Wisconsin System and the Board of Regents, in partnership with a variety of interested parties across Wisconsin, will host a statewide economic summit in Milwaukee Nov. 29-Dec. 1 to help create a strategic plan for Wisconsin in the "New Economy." Regent President Jay Smith says the summit will be a "coming together of the best and brightest ideas in Milwaukee's manufacturing, technology and professional sectors, the Chippewa Valley's burgeoning high-tech corridor, the fast-growing Fox Valley-to-Green Bay region, and the Greater Madison biotechnology sector, for starters." RCMS is A-OK

Fifty students from a six-state region are on campus to study mathematics and scientific research as part of the Regional Center for Mathematics and Science (RCMS) camp. Students from Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota and Indiana spend six weeks exploring careers in medicine, nursing, physical therapy, medical research, and similar careers. The RCMS is a federally funded, residential pre-college program, designed to enhance and enrich high school students' understanding of science, mathematics, and the nature of scientific research, and prepare them for a university program of study in those subject areas. All 50 students are potential first-generation college students or come from low income households and must have a 2.3 or higher cumulative GPA (on a 4.00 scale), and a goal of entering a post-secondary institution of choice. See a camp photo at http://www.uwgb.edu/univcomm/news/page/photo.htm
