UW-Green Bay plays in NCAAs at about 7:30 Saturday

Tipoff has just been set for about 7:30 p.m. CST Saturday (March 18) for the Phoenix women's basketball game at national power Old Dominion University in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The game will be aired on WECB-FM 104.3; the game will not be televised. The Phoenix women (21-8) are making their third consecutive trip to the Big Dance and fourth in school history. They earned a 13th seed, their highest ever, with their come-from-behind win over Cleveland State in the MCC tournament. Old Dominion (27-4, seeded fourth, and ranked No. 13 in the country by ESPN/USA) is coming off its ninth consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championship. The Lady Monarchs are led by Hamchetou Maiga, a junior forward from Mali, and forward/center Lucienne Berthieu, a junior center from France who has been out with injuries but is expected back for tournament play. The game will be played at the ODU Fieldhouse in Norfolk, Va., as the second game of a doubleheader.

Regents set salaries for UW System leadership

The UW System Board of Regents met Friday and approved executive salary levels for the leadership of UW System institutions, as well for UW System officers and System President Katharine Lyall. The Regents said they are moving toward making the System more competitive nationally. "While the salaries we approved fall short of what peer institutions in other states are paying their executives, we have taken a step toward investing in the kind of leadership we need to keep the university strong," said Regent President San W. Orr. The Regents set Lyall's annual salary for 1999-2000 at $199,000, or still only about 70 percent of the market midpoint. Chancellors' compensation, varying from the $136,000 range at the smaller comprehensives to the $190,000 range at the two doctoral institutions, was generally within a few percentage points of what the Regents identified as their target midpoint (the average of peer positions nationwide, less 5 percent). The state began to address the executive-salary issue in 1998 after a DER study requested by the governor found the System was "at a disadvantage in recruiting and retaining senior executives."

Most students can file taxes free online

The Wisconsin Department of Revenue is promoting something called the Quicken Tax Freedom Project to provide Wisconsin taxpayers with free web-based income tax preparation and electronic tax filing services. Under the agreement, Intuit will provide these services at no cost to tax filers with annual adjusted gross incomes of $20,000 or less, and all EZ filers regardless of income. Benefits include quicker refunds and the immediacy of online filing and instant acknowledgement. The UW System is asking campuses to share this info with students.
