Alesch research is central to University's new Center for Organizational Studies

Formally announced today is a $307,995 grant from the Public Entity Risk Institute (PERI) which will launch the first major project of the University's new Center for Organizational Studies. The grant will fund a three-year study aimed at helping small not-for-profits and businesses survive natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, storm surges, river floods and severe storms, says Prof. Daniel Alesch, PEA and director of the Center. The project will result in a report identifying which organizations survive and which fail due to natural disasters, a set of training materials to help small organizations deal with natural hazard losses, and an informational Web site. More on the Center.

Badgers' tournament success holds interest in Green Bay

Many around campus are feeling good this morning for friend and former colleague Dick Bennett, the onetime Phoenix coach whose surprising Wisconsin Badgers play Michigan State in a Final Four game of the NCAA Tournament at 4:42 p.m. Saturday (April 1). The team's late-season run also builds excitement for next season's Phoenix home schedule, which includes a matchup Tuesday night, Dec. 5, against those very same Badgers. Long awaited as the first-ever appearance by the Badger men at the Brown County Arena, the game now promises the Phoenix its first home game against a national semifinalist — or, as is still possible as of this writing, a defending national champion. UW-Green Bay Ticket Director Marilyn McCarey says season ticket sales should begin around June 1 and a strong response is expected with the competitive schedule and an up-and-coming Phoenix team.

A marathon is 26 miles? On second thought, count me in for half

Listen, if you can't make 26 miles, maybe you could handle 13. If enough members of the campus community show interest, there might be a half-marathon group from UW-Green Bay. If you're halfway interested in training with members of the campus community, again, e-mail or call Brian Nicol.

UW leaders say Southworth ruling upholds free speech

UW System officials can't say enough good things about the U.S. Supreme Court and last week's ruling in the national test case of Southworth vs. the UW System Board of Regents, et al. A group of conservative students had challenged the UW's segregated fees system because, they argued, it compelled support of political and ideological organizations with which they disagreed. The Supreme Court said "no" to that argument, upholding fee systems in place at Madison, Green Bay and other campuses. For more, see the UWSA web at http://www.uwsa.edu/univ_rel/releases/rsouth.htm

Union's "campus card" efforts are recognized in national publication

The University Union gets a mention in the March issue of The Bulletin, the magazine of the Association of College Unions International. UW-Green Bay is highlighted in the "What's New" section on creative and innovative practices for a move to make it easier for students and others to deposit money into their campus card accounts. The service is now offered at any operation within the Union with a Passport point-of-sale reader. Decentralization of the service reduced traffic to the Point Plan office, which is only staffed part time.
